World’s largest network of local groups, Meetup, has raised capital from Union Square Ventures. The site allows people to manage a local group or find the old ones which are already having get together.
The site was founded in 2002 and has prominent board of directors like the eBay founder and Chairman, Pierre Omidyar, Meetup co-founder, Scott Heiferman, etc.
According to Meetup, their mission is to:
revitalize local community and help people around the world self-organize. Meetup believes that people can change their personal world, or the whole world, by organizing themselves into groups that are powerful enough to make a difference.
The site has also been used to manage political advocacy groups, book clubs, sports teams and a lot more. Previous capital of the site was $2 million and was raised from eBay, Darper Fisher Jurveston, Omidyar Network, Allen & Company and Esther Dyson.
