Mahalo makes cuts, in view of economic crisis

Saad Ali Abbasi

mahalo_logo Mahalo recently made some cuts in their costs in view of the recent economic crisis, thereby laying off just under 10% of their staff. Mahalo’s CEO, Jason Calcanis, previous co-founder of Weblogs Inc., made a blog about this move. He defended that the company has sufficient amount of funding and is ahead of its schedule; yet it is aware of the upcoming advertising climate which is going to be severely low, and to ignore this fact would be bad for business.

Jason stated that they shifted things around with renting desks, and by reorganizing their editorial department to focus on freelance positions over in-house editors. Mahalo, a human-powered search engine, now lookings towards another year of dry power to complete their mission, as stated in his blog post.

The staff that was laid off is supposed to be the best of the best, as Jason mentioned at FOWA, London, that he hires only the top and best possible talent.
