Look out Yamli! Google deploys an Arabic transliteration service: Google Ta3reeb

Saad Ali Abbasi

GarabicTransliteration_logo Google recently launched its Arabic transliteration service, allows users to use their Latin keyboards to type in Arabic text, thus taking on the Yamli service already offering a similar tool (covered last week).

Yamli, a popular service in this regard, is now up against a ‘giant’ of a competitor. Though this isn’t the first time Google has done transliteration work; as they have previously launched transliteration services from English to other (Indian) languages on Blogger and through Google Talk bots.

Google however pumped up competition as it ‘was’ advertising (taken off recently) its Google Ta3reeb service through Google ads (alongside search results), whenever a search would be run for Yamli or Yamli.com on any of Google’s Arabic portals (google.ae).

Though Google didn’t violate its AdWords policy as it only bans names trademarked outside of the U.S., U.K., and Canada, from being used as an ad keyword. And since Yamli CEO stated that his trademark is filed in the U.S. there isn’t an issue. This could be a first though as, usually, searches on Google don’t return results for Google products.

Google Ta3reeb was one of the services seen at the Google booth at Gitex Technology Week in Dubai. Usage comparison rates Yamli higher still though, as it is faster and offers more relevant transliterations and word suggestions.

one the other hand Google Ta3reeb is far less accurate and is behind Yamli in terms of features see post here:

Definately. Google’s Ta3reeb is fresh out, and will take (some) time to come up to terms with the related service.
