Frank, I hope you know FolderShare by Microsoft does serve as a true P2P way of syncing files just like you want.
And without a thick client, you wouldn't be able to automatically sync your files, as you'd have to fire up the browser everytime which just breaks the experience of automatic syncing to the cloud.

One thing to note about Live Mesh, you MUST store files in the cloud, at least I haven't found a way to do true P2P syncing of files. This requirement breaks Live Mesh a bit for me because I would like to use it to sync files between my PCs that I consider confidential and don't want on a server.

Live Mesh is also thick client, keeping with Microsoft's tradition of building Windows apps and also keeping somewhat in tradition with Groove. MobileMe is pretty much all web-based AJAX.
