Kongregate, a social network for gamers has launched and announced that they have raised $1 million in angel funding from some big names like Reid Hoffman (co-founder Linkedin), Joe Kraus (co-founder Excite and JotSpot), Jeff Clavier (SoftTech VC) and Richard Wolpert (Disney Online).

Gaming is always sticky with large and loyal followings, this is what makes Kongregate special as its a social gaming site bundled together with a social network. Users can chat with other players in the game in real time, Game developers could upload their games to Kongregate, earn revenue (25%-50%) and become a de-facto part of the community. Users earn points, move to higher levels, unlock special powers, and collect cards for task completions among other things.

I must admit that the site is really sticky. Competitors include Pogo, Miniclip, Newgrounds and Cafe.com but none of them have real time chatting and revenue sharing model till now.

Kongregate is based in San Francisco and was founded by brother Jim Greer (a game industry veteran) and Emily Greer (am interactive marketing executive.)
