Kaltura has announced today the launching of first open-source video platform for video management, creation and collaboration along with release of a new improved version of video-wiki extension for the MediaWiki software. The news was followed by an announcement according to which they will add video to Wikipedia by the end of current year.
Founded in 2006, the company competes with the likes of Brightcove, Maven, Ooyala and Delve Networks by providing an inexpensive, flexible and most importantly an open source alternative.
To support their new approach, they have concluded the B round of financing. The round was led by 406 Ventures along with the existing investor Avalon Ventures.
The extension provides plenty of options to the users of MediaWiki based sites like collaboratively upload and remix videos, images, slideshows, audio tracks and animation and to boost any wiki article with interactive videos. The extensions can be downloaded by anyone for free. It has already been downloaded by thousands of developers and also deployed on the leading wikis including Wikihow, WikiEducator and many Wikia communities.
According to Kaltura Chairman and CEO, Ron Yekutiel:
We have seen great traction with our self-serve video solutions so far; new wiki partners and developers contact us every day. The new version is based on wiki admin and developer feedback – now we invite the community to download the new version and look forward to their ongoing input
On some other projects he said:
In addition we are now working on additional free open-source video plugins for popular web platforms such as WordPress, Drupal and others that are now in alpha and that we plan to launch in the coming months.
