ISP says its Illegal P2P can’t be stopped

Saad Ali Abbasi

scarlet_logoA Belgian ISP Scarlet replied to a court’s verdict to stop illegal file-sharing on its network, by saying it simply can not. After trying to slow traffic and also filter it, its’s not possible to contain the flow of illicit files. This is due to the fact that the ISP has to pay compensation of 2,500 Euros for each day. Scarlet has tried numerous methods to divert the situation, the latest being (by the court’s ruling), usage of Audible Magic for content filtering. Though that didn’t even work as Audible Magic refused to comply.

The issue took off in mid-2007, having to battle with copyright group SABAM, a Belgium court ruled that the ISPs can be forced to block/filter copyright infringing files on P2P networks. The case is put in pending now, and a ruling is not expected until 2010.
