iSkoot already had a partnership with Skype to offer VoIP services to mobile phone users. This partnership also included offering services to Skype branded mobile phone users around the globe. The acquisition of Social.IM will allow iSkoot to market web based IM service to its users that would be leveraging the social networking bandwagon.

Social.IM’s client can be customized for desktop as well and allows users to send real time updates and notifications (such as activity tweets) to friends on social networks. Although now Facebook has also launched its own IM service, iSkoot could move forward to other social networks by enabling users of MySpace, Bebo and the rest of the crowd to IM their friends.

iSkoot also plans to bring the social IM features to its mobile clients. iSkoot did not disclosed the terms of the deal. The company has raised $13 million from investors which include such names as Khosla ventures and Charles River Ventures.
