image thumb69 iPod sales flattening amidst tough competition from the iPhone

iPod was once an iconic success for Apple. The portable music player not only cemented Apple’s position as a leader in the portable music space but also allowed Apple to command a solid position in online music album sales via the iTunes. While doing all this, the device at one time was responsible for almost half of Apple’s annual revenues.

However, things are now changing for the magical music device. It seems that the iPod now face a stiff competition from a rival product which is none other than the iPhone. The iPhone as a consequence of its explosive growth (3 million iPhone units sold in the first month) has almost rendered the iPod irrelevant. The sales of iPods, that once enjoyed triple digit growth, have now flattened. If this could be taken as signs of the times to come, than we could safely predict that the iPods would soon be found in museums of modern gadgetry, unless and until Apple does something magical with the device once again.

But is there anything in plans for iPods at Apple is the big question. We have confirmed reports that Apple is all set to produce 40 million iPhones per annum and has released it in 22 countries around the globe with totally universal push coming soon. In addition to this the iPhone Apps store is already showing signs of a $1 billion economy. If that was not enough there are rumors that Apple would be unveiling iPhone nano before Christmas.

Among all this hula created by iPhone, we have yet to hear any substantial news about the future plans, designs or roadmap for the iPods. Is Apple really thinking to dump it, or is there something big in store for this Sep. Keep your fingers crossed.
