hmm.. Rob, from what I’ve read from different sources, specially Eric Shmidt’s quote, it does seems like web applications will lead the way to Web 3.0 . And these applications will be independent of the platform. This has already begun with mobile devices and considerably expanded through the iPhone platform now, as it involves the GPS in many apps so that makes the hardware interact with these web apps too.
Social networks are already there, and myspace and facebook are earning off them as well users earn through them too by ads and other ways. With location specifics the “social” is taken one step ahead of where it stands now.
Hence, I would like to call this a Web 2.5 era brought forward by handhelds.

Web 3.0 is not a piece of hardware or software. All of that and every future tool to be built will forever be classified as Web 2.0.

In Web 3.0, hardware (web1) is no longer the platform, the internet (web2) is no longer the platform, People are the platform. Social networks will be organized into viable workforces earning money for the host site and the individual network members themselves.
