Global IP Solutions recently launched a VoIP app for Apple’s iPhone, which enables developers to create real-time VoIP applications, such as games, social-networking apps and the ever-popular applications for making calls to regular phones, through the Internet. This means, you will be able to use your IM to voice chat with friends on the iPhone, just as on your computer.
GIPS, a company well recognized for its expertise in IP communications – inventors of the popular iLBC codec standard (approved by IETF in 2004), currently implemented it in the iPhone. GIPS’ decision seems justified as iPhone 3G’s soaring popularity has people wanting to buy and still lining up outside Apple stores – analysis shows sale of 1M iPhone 3Gs over the launch weekend.
GIPS claims that its voice engines have far more popularity and usage than any other voice engine worldwide. The service enables businesses and consumers to enjoy affordable, high quality VoIP, even under adverse network conditions.
Although, due to Apple’s policy of blocking use of VoIP on the (AT&T) carriers’ data connection, GIPS VoiceEngine Mobile will only work with iPhone’s Wi-Fi connection and will not take advantage of the new iPhone 3G connection. Hoping this will change in the future, for now AT&T’s 3G coverage isn’t up to mark and hence unreliable for VoIP calls.
