In a software-centric world where there are already have many, many languages to program in, from scripting to bytecode compiled languages, to frameworks on top of languages and embedded languages, now Redmond wants to bring another language to the table, titled ‘M’. C# being it’s widely popular programming language after it’s still liked language VB and VB.net, Microsoft now tries to bring upon a change in the developers mind for more web oriented languages.
Based on XAML, “M” would be based on Microsoft’s much hyped about SAAS strategy dubbed Oslo. M will be released in 2010 alongside the release of Visual Studio 2010 with 2 other components “Quadrant”; a tool for visual model building models, and a repository for storing and viewing models in an SQL database.
The rumors being it will be also based upon the .net programming model.
OOP being a major focus this time but tying it with MS SQL and ASP.net would definitely make it attractive for developers, especially those of web oriented mindset.
The F# project of Microsoft Research is also a good try to use focusing on functional programming models as testing ground is rumored to be as a foundation for “M”.
Going back to the early days back in the Y2K when Java was being quickly adapted by programmers, and Microsoft came up with C# to give programmers strong OOP functionality, but did indeed face a huge ask to convert it’s core VB developers to C#.
Now after the advent of PHP and other web oriented languages do you think MS can still succeed in shifting the programmers mind to another language? Do comment…
