Twitter has been under discussion for quite some time due to its down service. Other micro blogging services are making use of this time in order to get some room in the market. Its a race of micro-blogs, where every service is trying to do something different in order to gain popularity. A new dimension in this race has been given by InGameNow. It is a sports micro blogging service or you can say twitter of sports.
InGameNow was started by 10 friends who were all sports fans and used to exchange emails and texts regularly regarding their favourite teams and on going games. The startup is a product of sfEntrepreneurs Inc.
As the service is in the beta stage, it deals with a few sports/leagues which includes MLB (Major League Baseball), NBA League(National Basketball Association), College Basketball (NCAA), College Football (NCAA), National Football League (NFL) and National Hockey League (NHL). To avail the services of the site, you have to register which is a very simple process and its free too.
Once you log on to the site, you’ll be able to see the above mentioned leagues. You can choose your favourite team of the league and start participating in the discussion. Once you go to your team’s page, you’ll be able to see the team calendar (upcoming/previous games), related events and top users of the team.![]()
An interesting feature of the site is that it not only allows you to send ‘General Comment’ but also ‘Game Update’. The limit for number of characters that can be sent is 150 (10 more than Twitter or Plurk which makes it better than them in this regard).
The San Francisco based company which was founded in February 2008, also provides you an opportunity to update through Instant Messaging services i.e. AIM, GTalk and also through email. This way you can stay in touch with the score line while on the go. You can add more than one team of a league as your favourite and also different teams from different leagues, all at a time. NBA draft is the major topic under discussion right now.
Watching this service, I see more specific micro-blogging services coming in the near future which may concentrate on different topics like fashion, business, education, etc.
The overall service is awesome and being a sports fan, I liked it very much. They just have to make sure that their service won’t go down like twitter. To improve the service they can Induct more leagues (like Major League Soccer etc.), which would certainly bring popularity to the site. Furthermore they can also include more sports and cover the international arena. SMS alerts will also help build the image of the site. I hope to see improvements in the site soon.
