We had reviewed identi.ca few days ago. The service better known as “federated Twitter clone” soon after its release was covered by majority of blogger because of its true Twitter-ish resemblance. It was indeed a good trial to rescue the refugees of Twitter and is capable enough to beat an over capacitated whale. In addition to its interesting and innovative features, the service has recently implemented a Twitter-compatible API that will provide an ease to developers and users. Now any app that is working with Twitter can also work with identi.ca by following the API root http://identi.ca/api.
The new API seems to be promising as Dave Winer, Blogger and RSS pioneer, (who was really excited on inauguration of identi.ca ) has already tested it by substituting the Twitter’s URL with identi.ca’s. This will really help identi.ca to make itself a concreat micro-blogging platform and to gain huge public confidence. The only thing left is, it has not been tested by rest of the users and therefore, we cant predict anything right now.
Twitter has already made it difficult for third-party developers to use its API as applications can make only limited number of calls in a certain period of time. This can be a good point for identi.ca as it has successfully achieved the virtual identification of Twitter’s community and it can gain a lot of attention by number of developers as they can be able to make use of Twitter by implementing identi.ca’s API.
Therefore, the new API will be equally beneficial for both services. Twitter would be able to get most out of it, by maintaining its standard during its downtime while identi.ca will be able to attract scalable user base of twitter. Identi.ca’s popularity will also help it by gaining Twitter’s clients vote as its virtual resemblance with twitter can force them to add option for identi.ca also.
