There could be people who might not want anyone other than their friends to have a sneak peak into their personal lives. For example School Teachers might not want their pupil to find them on Facebook, Lawyers might not want their clients to know what they are doing on the web and so on. There could be other personal reasons for not wanting your profile to show up in search results on Facebook.
Fortunately Facebook provides such granular controls that allows you to switch off your profile from being visible in not only Facebook Search Results, but in Google searches as well.
Hide your Profile
In order to stop your profile from being listed in Facebook search results, just go to your Search Privacy Settings page. Once you are on this page, you would find two options that you can customize, “Facebook Search Results” and “public Search Results”. The default for “Facebook Search Results” is “Everyone”. You can change it to “Only Friends”. By doing so, the 350 million facebook users would no longer be able to search you on Facebook and your profile would only be visible to your friends.
Majority of people on Facebook find their old friends by searching for their names or other personal information that they know about their friends. By hiding your profile from appearing in Facebook search results, your old childhood friends would no longer be able to search you on Facebook. So if connecting with childhood friends was not one of the primary reasons for you to join Facebook, we recommend you to keep your profile visible in Facebook search results.
