Hitchsters, a NYC based company has launched a service that connect air travelers for shared taxi rides. The service allows people to sign up and once a match is made both of them are notified via sms and email messages containing the first name and cell phone number of the other cab mate. The first person to leave pays 60% of the fare till that point, including tolls, while the other one will pay the rest of the fare plus the tip. If both people are sharing the taxi to the same destination then both of them will pay 60% of the fare, with the additional 20% going towards tip. Hitchsters also allows you to opt for gender preferences of your co-rider.

The company was founded out of frustration of rising cab expenses by NYC attorney Terry Crawford and his wife. The service will soon be launched in Boston and Brooklyn.

While we are at it, there is a service in Germany called MitFahrer, using which people who are driving in their cars to other cities could register themselves by specifying the time and date of their journey. Others who don’t own a car and wishing to travel to that destination could then sign up and hence split the petrol expenses with the driver. May be someone might be interested in starting a similar thing in U.S.
