Online security and email service to over 40,000 companies is provided by Google Apps Security & Compliance team. The team keeps an eye on the online security vulnerabilities which includes the trend of spamming, viruses and other risks.

Now the team has come up with its latest findings, the one which everyone should be aware of. Here are some of the findings.

The month of July saw the biggest number of email virus attack this year with the number of virus messages reaching almost 10 million on July 24. One of the major attacks in the month was a spoofed UPS package-tracking link which was meant to attract users so that they can click the link and download the malware. The email was first detected by Google’s zero-hour protection technology on 20th July.

Many of the viruses as observed by the team, follow the same format in which an email is sent which contains an embedded website link  which is different from the displayed link.

In another case, a spoofed CNN newsletter was sent to users in which there were a lot of news links, most of which were authentic but a few were replaced by malicious links.

Since these messages were detected by Google, they implemented a filter which stopped these viruses and provided security to their 14 million users. The number of viruses in summers seems to be rising. Some new type of viruses were seen this month.

August 5 saw a number of messages with an encrypted .RAR attachment. Overall this year there has been a significant decrease in the use of attachments which means that the trends do change after some time.

There is an upcoming event by Google which will emphasise on the security aspect i.e. how to make your business secure. The topic which will be explored at the occasion will be “How spam is changing your business email, and what to do about it”. The event will take place on August 15th at 10:00 AM PDT. You can also tune in to the webinar.
