Google Translate Added 11 more Languages

google_translate logo Google Translate has added 11 new languages to boost the user experience. It now supports 35 languages that can be used to translate text between any combination of languages. The list of recently added languages are:

 

  • Catalan
  • Filipino
  • Hebrew
  • Indonesian
  • Latvian
  • Lithuanian
  • Serbian
  • Slovak
  • Slovenian
  • Ukrainian and
  • Vietnamese

Google machine translation service uses English as an intermediary language and thus translates every source language into English before proceeding to the destination language. The approach could be helpful to add more languages as the previously licensed Systran’s technology restrict Google to translate between English and French, German, Spanish, Italian and Portuguese. Its own translation technology is now supporting array of languages and adopts following strategy to generate productive and efficient results:

Our system takes a different approach: we feed the computer billions of words of text, both monolingual text in the target language, and aligned text consisting of examples of human translations between the languages. We then apply statistical learning techniques to build a translation model
