The search engine giant Google is expected to layoff the contractor workforce which is 10,000. Though the layoff news was confirmed by Google, the exact number of job cuts is yet to be known. In an interview to Mercury News, Sergey Brin said that the company is concerned with the high contracting expense.
According to Jane Penner, Google’s spokeswoman:
We have 10,000, and we have had a plan in place for awhile to significantly reduce that number.
This is something we’ve been thinking about for awhile–six or seven months. It predates the most acute phase of the (present economic) crisis.

For a company whose slogan is “do no evil,” it’s kind of ironic they were hiring tons of people when they allegedly planned to lay them off immediately thereafter. I know folks going to Google as a contractor in August with the belief they were supposed to be there for at least a year based on their funding and documentation. Oh well!
