Google should obtain ‘eXpresso’

Saad Ali Abbasi

eXpresso_logoFor most the weakest component for Google has been its Spreadsheet, whereas being the strongest for Microsoft. If Google bought eXpress Corp. it could still win the spreadsheet game, as MS Excel is at bit behind times when it comes to collaboration.

eXpresso allows Excel users to share their spreadsheets – was named as one of PC World’s 25 Most Innovative Products of the Year 2007. It arrived in the market solving real word problems as opposed to companies that look at how much money Microsoft makes with Office and wants a piece of it.

eXpresso focuses on Excel, they don’t try to replace Word, or Powerpoint or Outlook for that matter. Although Excel’s native collaboration tools are weak, people are comfortable with, it works well; is extensible, and easy to use.

Google has an upperhand as it has Gmail and Document (although with recent un-timely shutdowns by Google, it is lagging behind). Google could win big, if it fixed the spreadsheet problem, thus having the ‘whole package’, it would be able to stand up to its competitors and reach a global market, try to replace Excel by getting clients to switch to a mature all-Google product, when it is ready to do so.

That however can be achieved by buying eXpresso, or maybe Microsoft or Yahoo could buy stronger Expresso, and hand it to their programmers, telling them to work harder and faster!

Unfortunately Expresso only works well with Internet Explorer and will be a paid service after leaving the beta stage. Though an official has mentioned that eXpresso will also have a free version beside the commercial one once out of BETA.

For hardcore Excel users who need to collaborate on their documents, Expresso is from a technical point of view by far the best solution.
