googlesearchappliance thumb Google releases bigger and faster next generation of Search Appliance Google has released a new generation of their enterprise search appliance with loads on new improvements and feature and capability enhancements. The new appliance now has 3 times as much capacity as its predecessor and can store upto 10 million documents as compared to 3 million in the previous version.

Capacity is not the only improvement in the new version. The new device works two to five times faster in getting you your required results. This enhancement in speed has been made possible due to improvements on both the hardware and software levels.

With such immense capacity and speed Google’s single search appliance could probably serve the needs of an entire organization that might previously use dozens of servers to do the same task. To quote Nitin Mangtani, Lead Product Manager for Google’s Search Appliance:

Most enterprise search solutions would require 10, 15 or even 20 servers to store that much data

In addition to the speed and capacity enhancements, the new device offers a great deal of customization as well. Companies can now weight the search results based on meta data information such as the document type, author, date and so on. Users can also receive notifications in a category to which they subscribed, whenever new content is added on the Intranet. This is made possible as a result of integration with Google Alerts.

Google Enterprise Search Appliance user base has doubled since last year to hit the 20,000 mark. Other Google offerings for enterprise search includes a more affordable Google Mini, and site specific Google Search. See an overview of what’s in the latest version in the video below.
