Google recently released it new service called Google Map Maker. This service is to involve users in the process of making the map better and more understandable. There are various remote parts of the world which cannot be easily reached and hence it is very hard to collect data from such places. What Google Map Maker did is that it provide users an opportunity to customize the map. Users can customize the map by adding various options which include adding points, drawing lines (roads, railway, etc.) and shapes (lake, local parks etc.).
When the service was released, it provided support to very limited places. Now the Google Earth and Maps team has announced the availability of its service for 40 more island nations.
Adding points let you add different places like restaurant, cafe, etc., drawing lines let you draw road, railway, river etc., where as drawing shapes let you draw lake, local park etc. Once the map is edited, the data is conveyed to Google so that it can be put to the actual Google Maps product.
According to Google’s software engineer, Lalit Katragadda:
Google Map Maker - a tool that allows users to build maps of their neighbourhoods, cities and countries. Today, we’re excited to open up Google Map Maker to forty island nations.

The places which cannot be customized appear gray. This service sounds pretty good but whats challenging for Google is to authenticate those places.
