Google is developing image processing to support an effective searching and organizing of images. Digital images grows as fast as the Internet world is growing as they make major portion of our web world. Thanks to digital cameras and camera phones, that play a major part in the proliferation of digital images. R.J.Pittman, Google’s director of product management for consumer search properties, in his interview with Beet.TV said that around 100 billion images are captured and uploaded every year. He expects an abrupt growth of around trillion uploaded images in the future.
Therefore, the Google is strategically working to organize these huge collection of images. Google has been working on Image searching for long but folks at Google are trying to add more and more to the utility of Image Search by adding newer and exciting technologies that will be able to search beyond image’s meta data and titles.
Pittman said that Google is currently working on image processing and visual search to crawl the pixels of images. For instance they are working on “facial recognition and are developing “scene analysis.
Pittman quoted an example of Panaramio, an online version of photo management by Google. Panaramio supports geotagging photos. “Geotagging is one of the most interesting feature incorporated with the image management as it attach an extra piece of info with an uploaded image about its location. It has great scope as the number of camera mobile phones with GPS are vastly growing. He didn’t mention Picasa(Google Photos) in his interview, may be because the online photo sharing service is hardly popular among mass sector or it cannot be compared with other well known photo sharing versions such as Flickr or Slide.
Overall, the goal to organize images can be considered as an effective step. Goggle has already named Picasa as Google photos by introducing some exciting new features. It might be possible that Google will merge the features of Google Photos and Panarama and make an interesting image management product out of it. Though, if they will stand by their intuitive steps and planning to enhancing Image Searching, then it would be able to capture good size of market.
