Google is closing Page Creator, Replacing it with Google Sites

Asma Kaleem

googlesites_logogooglepagecreator_logoGoogle Page Creator is now supposed to be the thing of past as it has recently stopped accepting new users. Being a project of Google Labs, this handy tool was used to create online web sites. The Internet Giant has decided to centralize its attention on Google Sites and therefore new users have to sign up for the Google Sites instead of Google Page Creator.

We are no longer accepting new sign-ups for Page Creator because we have shifted our focus to developing Google Sites, which offers many of the capabilities of Page Creator along with new features like site-level navigation, site-level headers, control over who can see and edit your site, and rich embeddings like calendars, videos, and Google docs.

Google Sites lets you create editable media enriched web pages. Its been a year, when the site has started working. Better known as Wiki Creator, the site was launched after the acquisition of Jotspot.

Google online Page Creator allows users to upload HTML pages externally, the feature that is not available in Google Sites.

While all the current users can continue using Google pages and their pages will automatically experienced a sound transition to Google Sites this year or users can also transfer their pages manually to Google Sites or any other Service providers.

We are committed to making this transition as smooth and easy as possible, and we will post more details as we get closer to the transition time.

The transition does make sense as Google Sites offers same set of features with some extra functionality and does not share any harm but it has one potential problem and that is, Google Sites and Google Page Creators follow different URL structures. This will be a great loss for all the current users as most probably they will experience a broken link to their web pages on undergoing transition.

We hope that Google will keep an eye on this problem and will definitely arrange something for its existing users to avoid broken links problems.

I have seen Google Sites, There is no comparison between it and Google Page Creator, Someone is trying to justify the purchase of the “Site” dreck, Jotspot or something like that. Google Page Creator had limitations, but it was ad free pretty simple to use if you didn’t want to learn web design and if you look at some of the pages created you can see some pretty intense customization done. That Site does not allow scripting of any kind makes it just not usable.

As far as “Do No Evil” This is evil

With Google Page Creator you could upload HTML files and it was much easier to make your pages look exactly the way you wanted using uploaded HTML files and CSS files (or CSS in HTML). With Google Sites you can’t use uploaded HTML files with CSS and you can’t use scripting either.

When I tried moving my Google Page Creator pages to Google Sites, I had to copy and paste the HTML source from the HTML files and change and tweak the HTML and it still looks disgusting. Also, my week old Google Sites website got banned, because its spam filter sucks so I had to contact the Google Sites team to get my Google Sites website back. Now my pages are back to Google Page Creator and I’m not sure what I should do. Google Sites is definitely Beta and should be told on every page on that service.
