‘Google Gears’ now lets you upload YouTube videos upto 1 GB

YouTube Gears

With the latest version of Gears, you are now able to upload YouTube videos more than 100 MB and the best part is that you don’t need any specific software to do so. Gears which is now being used by YouTube to upload videos, contains some cool features according to which it is now easy to upload videos with larger size.

With the new features of Gears, you can now upload a clip of size 1 GB and duration of 10 minutes. According to YouTube, the files after processing will be available in the ‘My Videos’ section. Though the files with bigger size may take upto half an hour to appear on the My Videos page.

According to Gears engineer, Andrei Popescu:

Another cool new feature is the Blob API. Unlike strings, blobs let you reference arbitrary binary data — a first for JavaScript! Therefore, blobs can more naturally represent things like files and images, and they can be passed around efficiently. We have updated several existing APIs to work with blobs, such as WorkerPool sendMessage() and HttpRequest send().

Furthermore he added:

We have also extended the Desktop API with a new method, openFiles(), which allows users to select multiple files of a particular content type, and then returns them as blobs for easy uploading or worker processing.

YouTube’s multi-video uploader proves handy if you upload  more than one video from a single video.

  • I'd really love to see Gmail and iGoogle have Gears support.

It is so annoying when iGoogle refreshes automatically and ends up half killing the browser... (and this is on a fast computer!)
Worse is that Google STILL hasn't even made the iGoogle page more dynamic in updates either..
