NYT reports that Google’s four execs might be jailed on charges (yet another one) of posting an offensive video at Google Video in 2006. The video shows a kid suffering from Down’s Syndrome is teased by four people, complaints were lodged against it and the video was removed. However the case has re-emerged and if Google is proven guilty four of its execs; CFO George Reyes, Peter Fleischer, its privacy counsel and another employee. What I find senseless about this case is none of the four were directly involved with and Google removed the video as peer its policy (one that removes offensive videos upon complains). Google issued a statement on the matter saying:
As we have repeatedly made clear, our hearts go out to the victim and his family. We are pleased that as a result of our cooperation the bullies in the video have been identified and punished. We feel that bringing this case to court is totally wrong. It’s akin to prosecuting mail service employees for hate speech letters sent in the post. What’s more, seeking to hold neutral platforms liable for content posted on them is a direct attack on a free, open Internet. We will continue to vigorously defend our employees in this prosecution.
All law apart, I am still clueless why individuals would be charged for this, especially when they had removed the video? Any clues?
