Google Earth and Maps team has recently released their latest updates on their interface, Beijing Olympics and ‘Walking Directions’. Moving forward the team has now released another update. According to Google, organizing the scattered data around the world needs to take advantage from the collective information and experiences of people through out the world and making that knowledge accessible everywhere. This will let users to explore different parts of the world the way they want.
For this purpose, a new layer has been introduced which is called ‘Places’ layer. In this release, data from various sources is gathered to create a multi-faceted layer. The sources include Wikipedia, Panoramio, Google Earth Community, YouTube, etc.
If you are to find a place in 3-D view of Google Earth, you have to look for a stack for photos like the ones displayed below. Furthermore Wikipedia and Panoramio photos icon has also been changed. Clicking on the icon will show you the bubble carrying related information about that place. Related stuff like photos, videos and downloadable KML files from the Google Earth Community are shown in the bubble.
Here is how the bubble appears for the Golden Gate Bridge.
Wikipedia layer has also been extended. Now the content of Wikipedia on Google Earth will match the language of later’s client. It means that if you are using one of 18 Google Earth supported languages, then the Wikipedia content will be displayed in that specific language.
Following is the screenshot of the Wikipedia bubble in Swedish language.
