Google has just released the Mac OS X version of Google Desktop. The software is Google´s foray into desktops dominated for decades by Microsoft and now they have shipped the Mac version as well, which was long asked for by Apple users. The software indexes the content on your hard drive and makes it searchable just like they do with the web.
The Mac version of the desktop search indexes and searches the following files types:
- PDF, TXT and HTML files
- iChat transcripts
- MS word, excel and powerpoint files
- Meta data for Audio and Video
- Address Book contacts
- Filestypes having spotlight (Apple´s desktop search software) plugin.
The mac version differs from the windows one in a sense that it even lets you search the text of webpages you visited, old versions of documents or files that you deleted. It also allows you to search for Gmail files even while being offline and when you search using the browser toolbar the web search results will be integrated with results from you computer.
Google has now dedicated an entire team to Apple Mac in order to port its softwares to Mac, so we would be seeing quiet a lot of these developments in the near future. Having Google CEO on Apple´s board certainly also helps the cause.
