‘Gmail down again’ with the “Temporary Error (502)”

Shoaib Hashmi

Gmail LogoGmail users yesterday faced problems while accessing their accounts. The service was down for almost an hour. While accessing the account, “Temporary Error (502)” message was shown. The service is now back.

A lot of messages regarding the service outage were seen on different micro-blogging services like Twitter and Friendfeed.

According to Gmail Product Manager, Todd Jackson:

Many of you had trouble accessing Gmail for a couple of hours this afternoon, and we’re really sorry. The issue was caused by a temporary outage in our contacts system that was preventing Gmail from loading properly.

On the cause of the service outage, he said:

The issue was caused by a temporary outage in our contacts system that was preventing Gmail from loading properly.

On the recovery of service, Todd said:

We’ve identified the source of this issue and fixed it. In addition, as with all issues that affect Gmail and our other services, we’re conducting a full review of what went wrong and moving quickly to update our internal systems and procedures accordingly.

This is not the first time the service went down, last week also the service outage was observed for a short time. Gmail is one of the most popular email services with a number of users, this is the reason why the service outage raised so much user voice on different forums.

Gmail apologized its users regarding the service outage.

We don’t usually post about problems like this on our blog, but we wanted to make an exception in this case since so many people were impacted.

Again, we’re sorry.

added Todd.

This is quite surprising as it has been working fine enough elsewhere.. I guess it has got a bad habit of acting random across the globe.

  14. Tina Says:

My apologies for making assumptions. Please allow me to explain my situation.
I was using ie as my search engine. I was able to access every other website address i typed in, do searches, etc with positive results. Yet, when I typed in gmail.com it would not direct me to gmail, although I could connect with google. Several of my friends encountered the same thing from different locations in LV, NV.
After 6 hours of that, another friend asked me if i tried using firefox. It hadn’t occurred to me (my false assumption was that if it didn’t work in ie it wasn’t working)
gmail.com came up fine when i tried it in firefox. so, my apologies for stating that gmail was down in LV, NV.
Not sure why it didn’t work in ie.
    User error?
I am blonde if that’s any consolation. ;-) JK

  15. Sardar Mohkim Khan Says:

@Tina, apologies accepted (though you didn’t have to apologize). I guess Gmail is teaming up with Firefox to drive away IE users. This can be some error at the user end as well, but as I mentioned gmail has some issues and yesterday many sites in the U.S had issues witht users connecting to them (VentureBeat to name one).

We are looking up at the matter and will report on it the moment we get a report or two more.
    Regards,
    Sardar Mohkim Khan

but found this on gmail help

“If you’re seeing a ‘Temporary Error (502)’ message when you try to sign in to Gmail, it means that your mail is temporarily unavailable. These errors generally resolve themselves within a few minutes, so please wait a bit before trying to log in again. Please note that while Gmail is inaccessible, your messages and personal information are safe.

If you continue to see this error over an extended period of time, please let us know so we can look into the issue.”

i guess we can flood gmail with reports for this to become a more high priority issue through their weblink

Thought Gmail was down for hours here in Norway, as I could not access my account last night or this morning. Page was just loading forever. The solution was to restart my browser (Firefox). Everything seems fine now. :)

  42. lazar Says:

I am currently in Serbia. i have a work e-mail address also powered by gmail. it’s been down since friday (four full days now, 96 hours). my regular gmail account however was fine… until this morning. both my work e-mail and regular gmail have the same problem: they just can’t load. Firefox gives me an interminable “loading…” message as the symbol in the top right corner keeps spinning. I never get to an error page or anything. What’s even weirder is that it keeps on “loading…” even when i turn off my internet connection. any other page in the process of loading immediately jumps to “Error 404 page not found” when the connection is severed, but gmail does not! very strange indeed…
