Gabtastik: Web Chat comes to desktop, not worth it

Sardar Mohkim Khan

Gabtastik Mesa Dynamics announced the beta release of Gabtastik for windows today.

Gabtastik is a desktop IM Client that lets you chat away using web chat services like Google Talk, Facebook without a need to open up the same in a web browser. It is Site Specific Browser, an application that has gained widespread popularity since Mozilla’s Prism project.

What makes it worth having on your system? First, that it uses the minimum memory compared to various other chat clients that require a dedicated memory for every option they have. Add to that it doesn’t give a very heavy feeling, given the option to make it opaque; which lets you hide it out when you are viewing or writing up a word document (as I am). Apart from that it doesn’t have any other options given its very limited feature (it seriously lacks something that makes it big).

Why does the opaque option make no difference to me? Well simple, why put up such an unnecessary thing when you are at a liberty to minimize the window, or more importantly when you click on another window the other automatically moves back. Confusing to me and more importantly quite useless, and having no other option makes it sounds a waste of an idea.

At times like these when the end user wants and gets a bundle of features with all the software he acquires, I personally think Gabtastik needs to bench-press more options that invite users into using it.

Gabtastik has just made a hatch and I seriously believe that with time and more importantly with inclusion of more services (include chat clients, messengers etc), it can be a pretty helpful tool.
