The software won’t sync your files or photos, but since it is open-source there is nothing stopping other developers from building such services on its underlying synchronization engine.
Yesterday Apple announced replacing its Mac service with MobileMe; which enables synchronization of email, contacts, calendar etc between the iPhone, Mac desktop and Windows PC. The service as planned would cost $99 a year, but what about those who want the same functionality for free? Funambol offers the same functionality with its downloadable app available on the official iPhone App Store on 11th July.
Funambol is an open source mobile 2.0 messaging software that allows mobile data synchronization server, pushing emails etc to mobile phones from various email servers (Yahoo, AOL, Gmail etc) and supports a large array of handsets. The support is even available for current iPhone and has been downloaded more than a 100,000 times.
The company running its own synchronization server, a beta site, myFunambol that supports Outlook, Gmail, Yahoo Mail. CEO Fabrizio Capobianco says;
‘When the new iPhone hits the market on July 11, we will have our synchronization product ready and will be free and open-source competitor to MobileMe that charges $99 and is completely closed.’
