Adobe is teaming up with Sony, and revamping its Media Player with a facelift. The deal with Sony means that users will be able to watch movies from Sony Pictures for free!* ( Ad Supported). Adobe will take an undisclosed amount fraction of the advertising revenue as reported by Webware.
Full length episodes of TV Shows from CBS will also be available as a result of the existing between Adobe and CBS. Adobe Media Player now boasts of around 600 shows and 25,000 individual episodes. The deal with Sony will expand this catalog, and also the user base significantly, now that movies from Sony Pictures will be made available. Although there is no word on whether the content will be region locked as with Hulu ( we hope that’s not the case though! ).
Content providers will have complete control over the advertisement they show on their content, and whether it will be available in streaming format only or could be saved on a person’s hard drive.
The new version 1.1 update, due today in the afternoon, will provide the new interface and content. Adobe Media Player is based on AIR and can play FLV videos as well. It can run on Windows and Mac OS X but not Linux. We’re excited to know about the new additions to the catalog, and we’ll be covering it as soon as it is out.

I only use Real Player and like this player over other players. But it has drawback as some of the videos need Windows Media Player to be played.

The question is this: Did we, the public, cause this through our methodically waning sophistication, or is it a result of undiscerning corporations realizing that with enough marketing dollars they can get anybody to see anything, effectively disposing of the necessity to have a quality picture to make money?
