Flock has released a German version of their popular social web browser available today. In recent times, Flock has seen an uptake in adoption and the company is now looking to go global. With their eyes set on globalization or localization, whatever you may call it, German version seemed an obvious choice keeping in view the large and rich German population. However, if I would have been on their team, I would have advocated to launch a Chinese and Japanese version before anything else.
The German version of the browser is not merely a translated copy of the English browser. Rather, it is something that the Flock team calls a "deeply localized" build of Flock. The Flock DE edition comes with local content, media streams and service offerings from popular German sites like Sports1.de, Bundesliga.de, Spiegel.de and FinancialTimes.de instead of their English counterparts. Search services and social networks like Facebook, Youtube, Flickr etc are defaulted to display a Deutsch picture.
Future plans of the Flock team include launching version 2 of the browser and rolling out further "deep localizations". Flock has recently raised $15 million in venture investment and aims to add 230 million users to its coffers. The browser might face tough competition in case Mozilla gets serious with its Coop Project.
