Open source textbook publisher, Flat World Knowledge received $8 million in Series A funding. The funding was provided by Greenhill SAVP. The company provides books from known authors as free web-hosted textbooks. In turn it generates revenues by providing students with options to purchase soft cover, audio textbooks at much lower rates compared to what they may originally cost. I think such ventures are going to have more talented authors make use of its services, providing support to both readers and writers.
