Today was the day when Mozilla finally decided to release version 3 of their popular browser firefox. However they took it a step further and decided to set up a competition to see if they could make it to the Guinness book of world records by setting a record for the most downloads of a software application in a single day. I don’t know if they have made it or not but the Spread Firefox site is showing 5.7 million downloads, that’s a huge count for a single day.
It is yet to be seen if they would try to have a record for the most downloads in the first week and the first month of release too. But by any counts 5.7 million downloads within 24 hours is a huge figure and any one trying to beat this would have to make something way better, quicker and slicker.
The interest in the new version of the browser was so intense that it overheated the Mozilla servers, however the glitch was only temporary and was taken care of shortly. Microsoft also plans to release a feature complete version of Internet Explorer 8 in August and Apple have already bundled Safari with iTunes. The battle of Web browsers is all set to go for a showdown this summer. Will innovation decide the leader of the browser battles or some other factors ? stay tuned.
