In North Carolina a federal court has given a verdict in favor of Verizon Communications awarding them an amount of $33.15 million. The company had filed a case against San Francisco based internet domain registration company, OnlineNIC. According to Verizon, the company had claimed that OnlineNIC had used 663 domain names which were confusing to the actual Verizon name. This means that Verizon will be given $50,000 for each domain name.
According to the vice president and associate general counsel of Verizon, Sarah Deutsch:
This case should send a clear message and serve to deter cybersquatters who continue to run businesses for the primary purpose of misleading consumers.
Verizon intends to continue to take all steps necessary to protect our brand and consumers from Internet frauds and abuses.
