Fallbrook Technologies recently stated that it has made a more efficient transmission system through coordinating the movement of spinning balls. The San Diego,Calif.-based startup also stated that it has raised $25.4 million in funding from NGEN and Rabobank, and plans to use it to expand production of its transmission.
The technology that Fallbrook has applied in its transmission is that of NuVinci, which relies mainly on a series of balls that rotate and tilt, and in turn transfer mechanical power – this is an alternative for using gears. NuVinci is cheaper as compared to other technologies and is easy to manufacture. CEO William Klehm states:
This is a very basic device, but it has the potential to have an immediate impact on improving the efficiency of hundreds of devices out there.
