Facebook’s recent overhaul, not to forget its controversial privacy policies, has gathered quite a bit of audience. I happened to stumble across Facebook developer’s blog recently and found that another upgrade was due to be rolled out soon enough. Also Facebook users would not be able to choose, if they wish to, whether they wish to stick to the old or switch to the new version. Users will be dragged into using the new profile.
This decision by Facebook however, has been carried forward after over 30 million people have checked out the new profile. Most of them using it as their profile full time, including me. For me, I have no issues with Facebook’s new outlook; it’s just that their user-information gathering techniques and supplying them to third parties is a little absurd (even after you’ve disabled your account, it’s like once you’re in, you’re in for life).
Anyway, enough with the criticism (I’ll have to do that later), lets get back to the changes. Facebook is nearing the time it’ll switch the remaining users of the old version, to the new one. This is expected to be done over the next week. Facebook is particularly excited about the feedback they’ve received from the users and developers. Especially on the fact how the applications have been integrating with the new features.
Based on all this, Facebook has been working to further improve the applications experience, and accessibility for users. The details will be brought forward soon, as the final design concludes. The coming week will see the migration of all Facebook users to the new profile. This process will execute by default, rather than asking users to opt-in. This will also see Facebook bringing in the new session key model, which will take effect for the applications log-in and authentication process. It will be done a week after all users are on the new profile. Thereafter the old Facebook profile will no longer be available.
