It comes off as a surprise whenever I get to read a rule that Facebook has for everyone and itself breaks it without the least bit of a thought, that of being answerable for this. The latest one is related to Facebook’s claim at cracking down any profile that’s considered fraudulent and approves it before users change their names.
Apparently the check has been lifted and those supporting Barack Obama have the privilege to change their names in support of the candidate. It’s no more a thought as many of Obama’s supporters have added ‘Hussein’ as their middle name.
The name has been added as Obama’s full name reads Barack ‘Hussein’ Obama; we here aren’t much concerned a to what name has been used or in whose support the issue to be addressed here is that Facebook usually confirms these changes, a process that takes 24 hours (the image below; as in Jordan Golson’s post).
This is where the issue of ‘breaking our own rules’ steps in and the name changes the moment you hit ‘confirm’ and re-visit your profile. And guess what if you try another name the rule steps in and takes 24 hours for a change! Huh! I call that using Facebook for a pure political purpose. What did Obama offer Zuckerberg? A seat in congress or a special budget dedicated to outgrowing MySpace at home?
