The statuses have been barged in by users of Facebook who are showing concern and sympathy with the people of Haiti after the country was struck by an earthquake yesterday. That takes the number of earthquake related news to two beginning with those in California. But all the reported on Californian earthquake has been dwarfed by the one in Haiti.
The earthquake is the most devastating one in the country in more than two centuries and tipped the 7.0 on the Richter scale. And it is quite a big boost to usability of Facebook as it is seen as a very vital source to share and spread information. Other than that it shows quite a lot of improvement of Facebookâs search tool. Taking a bulk of updates from millions of users that the social network has, indexing each in real time and displaying them upon a query is quite some task that so far has been very efficiently performed. Again the search results might only include status updates like prayers from those who feel the pain of the people suffering in the region.
What Facebook can actually do is explore ways of letting users filter content in these real time results. That way the information that is really meaningful, like facts, etc can actually be used by others to picture what exactly has been the extent of destruction caused by the calamity. I bet it will create a huge difference if Facebook is actually to make search even better.
