Finally some news about Facebook giving back something for a change. Recent advancements at Facebook suggest that it is trying to reach out and show its commitment to open source. This was backed by an announcement from the social network about its software Scribe, which would be released back to the open source community.
Scribe has played an instrumental part in helping Facebook manage the large amounts of data that come through its servers.
On the Scribe page you’ll find the following statements:
"If you use the site, you’ve used Scribe." And
"Server for aggregating log data streamed in real time from a large number of servers…designed to be scalable, extensible without client-side modification, and robust to failure of the network or any specific machine."
This’s quite a turn around I must say, as Facebook was under extreme amount of criticism for its ability to keep its infrastructure running at a reasonable cost. Though with this development, Facebook hits back by saying:
"Not only can we come up with something to run our site efficiently, we’ll let you see it, too."
