Facebook loses to MySpace at home!

Sardar Mohkim Khan

facebook1 Facebook loses to MySpace at home! With Facebook’s f8 going on in San Francisco, showing its global dominance in the social networking grounds. Back at home, MySpace takes the cake away back at home as it continues to grow to be the largest social network along with having a market share of visits tipped at over 3.5 times that of Facebook.

image202 Facebook loses to MySpace at home! Heather Dougherty at Hitwise comes out with an analysis of the performance. The over all analysis shows an increase in Facebook’s traffic by 23% where as that of MySpace dropped by 29%. The average time spent by each visitor reflects the growth with time spent on MySpace going down by 4% and that of Facebook increasing by 41%.

The geographical divide of the users when it comes to Facebook might primarily be due to the fact that most of its users age 25 and up, as compared to a pretty lower age boundary for users at MySpace. This leads to quite a lot of relocations thus helping in the spread of Facebook while MySpace remains concentrated in smaller area and dominating it entirely.

Hitwise made use of the DMA’s traffic share for each of the two websites; the graphs below (courtesy Hitwise) show that MySpace generates top DMA from LA, while Facebook’s DMA tops with New York. This is important as both LA and NY are considered to be quite significant for most Websites in the US.

But it still surprises one as to why Facebook fails at capturing the home market even though it’s the most successful social network globally with around 90 million users! The competition would finally come down to home with both sites recently announcing major changes, including  MySpace aligning with OpenID and Facebook introducing plenty of new features the most important being Facebook Connect.
