It turns out to be pretty hectic to differ between good applications within Facebook from the bad and more importantly to figure out which one of them is more popular and attracts more users on a daily basis. To solve this riddle Facebook has come up with a more effective method of promoting popular applications as well recommending a few to users as well.
Eric Zamore comes reporting about the new service that rates the applications according to the monthly active users rather than the previously used ‘daily’ active users. He adds in his blog-post:
When Platform first launched, you could see applications ranked by total number of installs. This was helpful to see which applications users had tried, but not necessarily those actually being used. To address this, we moved to ranking by daily active users.
The most recent update has been launched keeping in view a fact that most applications don’t attract users back everyday which in turn makes it difficult to point out whether the app is actually popular or not. The rating based upon the monthly active users helps users point out the most popular applications and those that have a longer user engagement; which means you get to know which one of the applications has more users visiting it over a longer period of time.
There is more on the plate; Facebook has another application recommendation algorithm named ‘Applications You May Like’ (as we mentioned it above). This helps you to figure out which of the applications have been liked by yours friends and those that have been used by similar users.
Well the recommendations based on popularity and how many ‘regular’ visitors each application attracts comes pretty handy when users have to choose from a wide variety of them. Let’s hope Facebook keeps up at providing its users with the best social networking experience for times to come.
