Talk about Green Coal. Sounds ridiculing but that is what Facebook thinks about its data center using coal to generate power for it in Oregon, US. I wonder what would make them environment friendly with all the black smoke coming out to run the servers for the social network.
To be honest this sounds very stupid. When almost every one plans to be environment friendly, the social network that provides all the green pasture for developers and users alike as well as business to thrive, appears to be going against the good of Earth. Apparently people have taken the case up and are demanding the social network that it drops the idea of taking up any such initiative. And when we say the users of Facebook have taken the matter up, it is some serious business they are talking about. We have seen that happen at Facebook all the time that people have a voice and if they can make it they can break it for sure. We saw that happen with privacy issues and how they united to make Facebook go back on its decision in 2008. We have seen how they come together as one to help the victims of natural calamities and they will definitely make something happen now to help Nature.
The people at Facebook have stated that the building itself is going to be energy efficient but that doesn’t count in keeping the environment green when your large data center is consuming natural resources to generate power. I personally think they made a wrong decision when they gave the power bit to PacifiCorp. The company states on the site that it generates almost 83% of its energy from natural resources like Coal, geothermal and gas. I am not sure how many of you are with Facebook on this one, I am totally against it. Firstly it is not at all environment friendly and secondly it will eventually have to move over to alternate energy once the Coal resources are exhausted.
Will you boycott Facebook if it resorts to Coal power? You can at least join the group to voice your concerns.
