‘Utilize the Wisdom of the crowds’ the promise of Digg that has allured users into using the service at finding out the latest news that matches their requirement. However there have been some problems up late, regarding the large number off news submissions (16,000 stories daily as reported by Kevin Rose co-founder off Digg) the task of going through the front page to find your item becomes extremely tiring.
The ‘Recommendation Engine’ that will be making a drive out for Digg’s registered users makes their life easy. The basic idea behind formulating and putting forward the service is to let you digg the stories that you like and based on that Digg finds similar users. Now how does that help in news? Well the users that Digg finds are used specifically to send you new stories that are similar to your liking.![]()
This saves the user from manually searching through the bulk of news that is daily submitted at Digg, plus it doesn’t guarantee that you get the fresh news of what you like. This could be due to the news sinking down as more news makes its way, eventually leading to a cloud whether certain news has been dugg or not (another reason why Digg hasn’t seemed fresh over quite a long time).
But the new idea; which lets you use Digg users as filters for relevant and interesting news would automatically allow more interesting content being dugg. Over all, the entire would help make Digg more efficient and help it stand up against major competitors like Mixx and Reddit, its biggest challenger that recently open sourced its code.
With everyone doing something to improve functionality, its great to hear that Digg took up the initiative at tailoring itself to the needs of present time; that too for the good of it.
