DEMOFall 08: Enjoy Robust, Durable, Thinner and Lighter Plastic Logic’s Kindles

Asma Kaleem

plastic logic If you are a technology enthusiast, who keeps on hunting for interesting and purposeful tech gadgets than you might have heard about the ‘electronic paper’ for the business documents. Plastic Logic, demonstrated at DemoFall 08, has developed a plastic e-reader for text documents and images.

Plastic Logic’s e-reader is a nifty tool that allows users to enjoy compatible and attractive e-versions of documents and images. The readers are as thin as the legal pad with a paper sheet size of about three-eights of an inch thick and weights only few Ounces. The compact gray- scale screen device can store hundreds or thousands of documents in it.

The slickly reader uses technology from E Ink to display images and text in grays and whites. Though the device is not ready yet, it will allow users to store e-books, magazines, newspapers, PDFs, CAD drawings, spreadsheets and much more. The device will be powered by the Lithium batteries that will last for several days while the data will be synchronized with a wireless connection.

PlasticLogicElectronicReadingDevice2 The most fascinating feature that makes it different from its well known competitor ‘Amazon Kindle’ is its semiconductor technology. The device is made of plastic instead of glass and would be far more flexible, efficient, durable, lighter and thinner than the existing kindles that are quiet bulky and offer less battery life with a limited scope.

The company’s whole idea revolves around the usage of plastic instead of silicon. The incorporation of plastic technology also saves the production time and expenditures.

PlasticLogicElectronicReadingDevice Plastic logic’s readers are designed to cater the ever growing demands of businessmen and e-readers. According to analysts, Amazon’s Kindles are ruling the Internet world and major publishers/universities are genuinely contributing their e-versions to be its part. But the current Amazon kindles are quiet incompatible with these heavy versions that makes them unattractive and useless. Though Amazon has planned to launch its large screen kindles the next year and thus its the perfect time for Plastic logic to launch its deftly flexible e-reader.

Apart from Amazon, other companies are also busy in making the perfect clones for Kindles. But non of them have focused on making something different from it like Plastic Logic.

The Mountain View, Calif.-based company has not named their e-reader yet. The Plastic Logic plant is built in Germany and is expected to go live in the next few days. Plastic Logic has raised $200 million funding till now and its plastic based robust e-readers are expected to hit the Internet markets in the middle of the next year.
