Center Networks is reporting that Dell will be using twitter for the live Q&A session during their "Global Mobility Event". The event is being held in San Francisco and will be live streamed. Dell has decided to use Twitter favoring it over a simple chat service and think that this is the way to go about doing these things in the future. According to Dell:
Users of Twitter…will be able to ask questions about Dell’s new products and the company will “tweet” the answers. Reporters and customers on Twitter can direct questions during the news conference to ww.twitter.com/Digital_Nomads. Dell will also blog about the Global Mobility Event at Direct2Dell. Dell is among the first major companies to offer reporters and customers the opportunity to ask questions on Twitter during a live news conference.
Allen argues that an interactive chat would make more sense as the viewers of the even can than chat in real time. Its obvious that twitter does not provides this kind of interactivity and hence would turn more into an email system with 140 character limit.
This is where I would once again like to introduce TextTheMob service, which is specifically built for situations like these. The service lets the users sitting in the hall to ask questions which could then be displayed on the large screen on stage. It could be used to get user feedback via polls results of which could be displayed in real time onstage as well. I think it is stupid to try to arm twist a service that is really not built for a specific purpose just because its hip these days in the tech world. Why not use something that is specifically crafted with these needs in mind.
