Bloglines gets a makeover and stuffs in advertising

Bilal Hameed

bloglines thumb Bloglines gets a makeover and stuffs in advertising Bloglines, the market leader in RSS feed readers that Ask Jeeves acquired in 2005, has now released a new makeover. The revised skin comes after many iterations and reviews from Blogliners and has kept the basic look and feel of the reader in tact.

In addition to this Bloglines as announced that it would be displaying ads, which at the moment are limited to search results and the start page. Bloglines tried to enter into advertising foray back in 2005 but after getting a severe backlash from the bloggers, who insisted that the company has no rights to monetize their content, backed off from the endeavor.

Although Bloglines is not displaying ads in front of content from others, but something tells us that this might be in works. Bloglines itself has hinted at this by saying that:

We’re in the process of developing monetization methods ($$) which work within a feed reader. We look forward to listening to Blogliners and working with 3rd parties to develop the next generation blog and feed networks. You’ll see more of the redesign soon.

The Bloglines fiasco kept other feed readers like Newsgator and Google Reader from serving ads as well. But with Bloglines shifting lanes once again the others are bound to follow suit sooner rather than later.

Although Bloglines is still the market leader in its category, its dominance is slowly eroding with Google Reader steadily catching up to it.
