A lot of people argue about the the negative aspects of BitTorrent and how it is affecting the industry. There is also a positive aspect, but it all depends on how you are going to use it. Many universities have banned the usage of BitTorrent, but there are some others which have allowed it in order to spread the knowledge. Stanford is among such universities which have realised the importance of BitTorrent and allowed their students to use it.
This means that the university thinks that using BitTorrent is not an issue of piracy. This is something which you won’t find many people agreeing. Currently the university is using BitTorrent to give away engineering courses and they have gained success to some extent.
Around 200,000 users around the world have visited the online courses site. The highest number of users are from Canada followed by Brazil and China. Though the file sharing protocol is being used, it has a dark side which is that the regular trackers are not used, instead they are using Vuze’s DHT tracker.
If you are a BitTorrent user and use a client which doesn’t support DHT such as Transmission, BitTornado, etc., you won’t be able to download the file. You won’t face any problem if you are Azureus or uTorrent user.
Although university has allowed BitTorrent, they still are taking necessary steps to stop piracy. If any student downloads a copyright material using the file sharing protocol, he/she is fined $100 for first time, $500 for second time and $1000 for third time.
