A report carried out by VentureSource shows how the venture capital investments in IT companies went down by 40 percent in the fourth quarter – making it the worst decline in a decade. IT venture capital shows a plunge of $2.18 billion in Q4. Whereas software companies which the biggest part of IT venture investments saw funding falling to $4.73 billion.

Over the past four years adult internet users signing up for social networks has seen a big increase. In the U.S. the stats have quadrupled: from 8% of adults having a social network profile in 2005 to 35% in 2008. The reason for this increase is particularly for, well, social networking and not for professional networking.

The European Union is on the case of Microsoft’s market monopoly in bundling its IE browser in Windows. This investigation has been going on since last January, after the commission received a complaint from Opera regarding Microsoft’s policy.

Rumors suggest that Nvidia put aside competitor Intel for Mac Mini’s graphic chip. Nvidia’s Ion chipset is most likely to be found in Apple’s Core 2 Duo-based Mini, although there’s no telling what is expected. We could see a low-power chip though it wouldn’t satisfy customer needs.

U.S. Airways Flight 1549 went down in Hudson River off Manhattan, after its collision with a bird, and this was picked up by a flight-tracking site FlightAware. The map above is a capture from the site and shows exactly how the plane went down. The good thing is that no one was seriously hurt as the captain took the plane belly down in the river – everyone got out safe.

As expected the economy downtime is seeing many big rollers fall flat – another newspaper to make it in headlines is The Start Tribune, as it filed for bankruptcy. Minesota’s largest newspaper filed for a bankruptcy petition stating that it would use this to restructure the company, see through its debts and cut down on labor costs.

Reports suggest that filing for bankruptcy was not foreseen, though as the company had missed its debt payments for the last few months, and failed to hand out pay cuts to employees, this should’ve been coming. Star Tribune has listed assets of $493.2 million and liabilities of $661.1 million. The newspaper’s publisher, Chris Harte states:
